This prequel (in spirit) to M*A*S*H was made while the Korean War was still being fought. A tribute to the human spirit, it portrays a realistic and unique vision of war from within the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals of the Korean War.

Humphrey Bogart stars as Major Jed Webbe, a hard-bitten and cynical surgeon with a taste for liquor and ladies and the transient lifestyle of the M*A*S*H tents, which are dismantled and moved like a traveling circus as the front line dictates. Ruth McGara (June Allyson) is a naive and honorable nurse who arrives fresh from the States full of optimism and vitality, capturing the heart and spirit of the notorious ladies' man. Made in an almost documentary-like style, this authentic vision of the grueling risks that the M*A*S*H nurses and surgeons faced daily serves both as a tribute to their spirit and bravery and as a reminder of the horrors of war.
